Grade a trail

Give it a trail line and a stated grade. It samples 1 m LiDAR elevation along the line, works out gradient and turn radius at every station, and grades the result against the NZ MTB Trail Design & Construction Guidelines. Two choices, one button — if you need to correct a trail line against aerial imagery first, use the trail editor instead.

Trail line

Where the trail is

Source

A KML line string — a Trailforks export, a GPS track, or a line drawn in the trail editor.

Ignored unless "Upload my own KML" is selected. 10 MB limit.
Used as the title on the results page. Defaults to the file name.

Signposted grade

What the trail is currently marked as on site — used to compare against the measured grade.

Changes the gradient/radius ceilings used in the "% under spec" figures and the mismatch banner.
Perpendicular DEM samples either side of the tread. Adds LINZ API calls and run time — uncheck to skip it.
Grading — usually under a minute; a bit longer the first time for a trail outside Canterbury/Christchurch.
